Sophomore Richard Kirby of Tewksbury competed with UMass Lowell on the first day of the Northeast-10 Conference Track and Field Championship at American International?s John G. Hoyt Track and Field Complex.
Junior Devin O?Neil of Braintree won the javelin while the 4X400 meter relay team shattered a school record. UMass Lowell currently has 43.5 points and sits behind Southern Connecticut, the leader with 78 points; and Stonehill, which garnered 49 points. The host Yellow Jackets (34) and Saint Rose (26.5) completed the top five.
The top two finishers in each event earn NE-10 All-Conference honors.
Two individuals and the 4X800 relay team earned All-Conference status for UMass Lowell, led by O?Neil who threw the javelin a personal-best 192 feet, 7.0 inches, the third-best individual effort in UMass Lowell history.
UMass Lowell?s 4X800 team posted a time of 7:33.00, which bested the previous school record of 7:41.84 set in 2004. Leading off was freshman Joe Cirnigliaro of Malden, who ran a 1:54.4 split and was followed by junior Scott Boiko of Chelmsford in 1:54.0; junior Omar Abdi of Charlestown, in 1:52.4; and junior David Brown of Chelmsford, who anchored in 1:51.7.
Junior Keith Lewis of Nashua, N.H., sidelined in the indoor and part of the outdoor seasons due to an injury, currently sits in second place after five events in the decathlon. Lewis highlighted with a win in the 400-meter dash (49.73) and shared first place in the high jump, 6 feet 5.5 inches. He also finished runner-up in the 100-meter dash (11.84) and the shot put, 33 feet 10.25 inches.
Sophomore Garrett King of Amesbury led three River Hawk scorers in the pole vault as he cleared 14? 5.25?? to place third. Sophomore Richard Kirby of Tewksbury placed fifth, clearing 12 feet 5.5 inches, while senior Chanra Chhean of Lowell cleared 11 inches 11.75 inches to place in a share of sixth.
Freshman Nicholas Staub of Dracut and Tim McMackin of Medfield did well in the discus, placing third and sixth, respectively. Staub threw 139 feet 10 inches while McMackin threw 133 feet 5 inches.
Junior Tyler Sullivan of Methuen placed seventh in the 10,000 meters in 32:58.21 while senior Eric McDonald of Groveland, placed seventh in the 1,500 in 3:56.74 to lead the distance runners.
Several River Hawks did well in Friday?s preliminaries to qualify for Saturday?s finals. Junior Tim Regan of Sandwich was the runner-up in the 200-meter preliminary and led three River Hawks in the top eight places.
Regan ran the 200 in 21.85 while senior Craig Bennett of Milton took seventh in 22.44 and junior Casey O?Brien of Seekonk eighth in 22.59.
Juniors Cameron Mitchell of Wakefield and Vladimir Francois of North Attleboro placed fourth and seventh in the 100-meter hurdles to book their places for Saturday. Mitchell posted a time of 15.10 seconds while Francois was right behind in 15.50.
Saturday?s program continues at 10 a.m. with the continuation of the decathlon.
