A day at the races ? BrownhillsBob's Brownhills Blog

Birds-eye view showing the approximate location of the Brownhills Race Course, such as it was. It would be at the Silver Street end of the Watermead development, on the old meadow. Imagery from Bing! maps. Click for a larger version.

I note today there?s been growing interest in the question of Brownhills Racecourse, such as it was. For younger readers, this wasn?t the old stadium by Chasewater which an unsuccessful trotting track, or it?s precursor, the trotting track on the site of Brownhills School?s field, oddly still marked in the current edition of the Birmingham A-Z. This ?Race Course? such as it was existed in the fields that stood where the Watermead estate is today, just off the modern Silver Street.

I don?t think this was a race course perhaps as we think of them today; I suppose, possibly it was more of a recreation ground and general purpose sports field. Remember, these were the days before universal access to the countryside, and before Brownhills really had public open space. Such a spot would be highly prized, and well used, I shouldn?t wonder. It?s no accident that it seemed to be owned for the large part by William Roberts, Brownhills top entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Peter ?Pedro? Cutler found some interesting references to this facility in the newspaper archives, which he listed in comments to the page Local Quiz 2, in conversation with David Evans:

One of the first mentions of the Dorsett dynasty in the local press in connection with the beautiful game? Nice spot by Peter Cutler, from the Lichfield Mercury of 1st May 1908. Click for a larger version.

The heading from the small article in the Lichfield Mercury of Nov 1905 is ?Brownhills Autumn Races?, with splendid weather and a large attendance. It seems an annual event since at least 1899 as there is the same title for a piece from 18 Nov 1899. The results, owners of the horses, and the Clerks and Judges are named.

Both are specific to Brownhills, I wonder if anyone can say where it was located.

There also appears to be ?Dog Racing at Brownhills? (hare coursing) at the Brownhills Racecourse. There was a competition between a dog from Bedworth and another from Nuneaton, and therefore must have been popular to surrounding owners. Also 1910?1913?

14 June 1907 there is an article about Athletic Sports on the Course. A 120 yard foot race handicap, and a one mile bicycle handicap (no mention of Brownhills Bob!).

24 Jan 1908 Pigeon shooting?

1st May 1908?.Large attendance at the Course for the football match between Brownhills Town and Shropshire LI? a Dorsett is mentioned!

The annual Wakes took place there.

No more mention after a dog event in 1913, but must have been quite a popular place. There are many personal names mentioned, just let me know if you are interested in them.

Best wishes Pedro

Being busy today, I didn?t get time to take a look, but I remembered reading about the racecourse somewhere. A frantic rattle through the bookshelf when I got home reminded me that, in the way things often are here on The Brownhills Blog, this was circular and Gerald Reece had an excellent section on the subject in his book ?Brownhills: A Walk Into History??

Gerald wrote the following:

BROWNHILLS RACECOURSE

Extract from a transcription of the Tithe Map of Brownhills kindly supplied by Gerald Reece ? more of this is a subsequent post. Click for a larger version.

At the beginning of the 19th century the large open field across the canal was a series of separate arable fields called Slang Meadow, Far Slang and Slang Croft. They were owned at that time by the Blew Family of Flint in North Wales. The naming of fields had been practised for hundreds of years and it is from these names that we can establish the ownership and location of many otherwise nondescript pieces of land. The fields were purchased by William Roberts of the Station Hotel in the 1880s and became the site of Brownhills Race Course and the venue of many other sporting and social events.

Horse-racing 100 years ago was far removed from what it is today, often not enough horses could be found. Even with fields restricted to four horses or less many ran more than once in a four race meeting. The main purpose of the event was to provide a day of escapism for the mining community. The race meeting and the annual wakes were held in the first week of November. A pleasure fair ?complete with sideshows, roundabouts, stalls, swings and other paraphernalia? attracted large crowds from the surrounding district. The main race on the card was the South Staffordshire Stakes. Ran over a distance of 1? ? miles and with a first prize of ?6 it was open to horses of 16 hands and carrying 12st 7 lbs. In 1894 it was won by John Ridley on Barbary, returning at 4/1, only three ran. John won the race again in 1896, this time riding the 3/1 shot Mrs. Sam, he beat the 6/4 on favourite Helen by a short head. Football was as popular then as it is now. Two teams used the racecourse for their home matches. They were Brownhills United F.C. who had been founded in August 1894 at the Station Hotel and a team that only played on Wednesday afternoons called the Brownhills Early Closers F.C. Brownhills Albion F. C. were based at the Hussey Arms.

Fine prizes for the best sportsmen ? and fireworks, to boot. This must have been every bit the spectacle. Clipping from ?Brownhills: A Walk into History? by Gerald Reece. Click for a larger version.

Sparrow shooting was a popular pastime, that is with everyone except the unfortunate sparrows. Live birds were caught and then released from traps to be shot at by local sportsmen. The Walsall Observer reported on one such meeting in February 1894, ?A sparrow shooting match for ?10 a side took place on Brownhills Race Course between William Gibbons of Bilston and Phillip Rathbone of Brownhills. 21 sparrows each, 11A ounce of shot, 21 yards rise and fall. Score, Gibbons 12 Rathbone 10.?

In January 1906 the same newspaper reported, ?A friendly pigeon shoot, when 110 birds from three traps fell to six guns in two hours. Also one passing seagull was brought down at a full 80 yards. Score, Guns 110.? Pigeons Nil, Seagull very unlucky.

Rabbit Coursing, a form of greyhound racing but using live rabbits became a regular event in the early 1900s.

Perhaps the most popular venue to take place on the racecourse was Pedestrianism. Athletes of the day, and sometimes of days long gone, would compete against each other in feats of endurance and speed for prize monies and often the clothes that they were wearing. Newspaper Report 1894, ?G Emery and J Geary, both of Brownhills ran 110 yards for ?10 a side. Both men were over 50 years old. Geary won. Betting on the winner, evens?. In another race C Bowman and D Hickin, both from Brownhills, ran 110 yards for ?10 a side. Both were confident and bet the gate money, pumps and drawers on the outcome. Bowman won by a foot.

The Racecourse was also a venue for the travelling shows. Touring Theatrical and Cinematographical Shows would entertain and enthral the culture seeking audience.

3 Ways to Reestablish Credit After Bankruptcy | personal finance ...

Once you?ve discharged all your debts you?re done worrying about your finances for a while, right? Wrong. Now that you have this on your record you?re going to have a difficult time doing anything with your history following you around, but once you establish some new history for your report of positive activity you?ll have a much easier time. The three ways to reestablish credit after bankruptcy listed below will get you headed in the right direction towards getting a decent score again. If you?re persistent you can have an acceptable rating in as little as two years.

Secured credit cards are probably the fastest and simplest option. They are built specifically to establish, or reestablish, credit. You can start these at your bank. Make sure you use the card lightly, using less than 30% of your limit and paying it off each month.

CD (certificate of deposit) secured loans are typically done with the idea of building some financial history. Not every bank offers these so make sure it?s an option before starting a CD.

If you have a loan that you were unable to discharge with your other debt, like a federal student loan, this a good opportunity to build some positive history. Even if you?ve had a bad history with this in the past, you can now focus on making timely payments (you have to pay it off eventually anyway, right?) and paying it off. Sometimes they will offer you the ability to pay so much for a certain period of time in some kind of credit program where they will then take their negative marks off your report, consider asking them about this.

No matter what you do, the important thing is to do something. With all the difficulties in the past it?s tempting to step out of the financial game, but your situation will never improve this way. The important thing is to make some kind of plan, with a thought out budget, and reestablish credit after bankruptcy.

Alt-Ed: Q&A: Khan Academy Creator Talks About K-12 Innovation

Lesli A. Maxwell / Published Online: March 5, 2012

Salman Khan, a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Harvard Business School, was working as a hedge fund manager when he began posting videos on YouTube six years ago to tutor young family members in math. That led to the 2008 creation of the Khan Academy, a nonprofit organization that has built a free, online collection of thousands of digital lessons (nearly 3,000 of them created by Mr. Khan himself) and exercises in subjects ranging from algebra to microeconomics. Education Week Staff

Writer Lesli A. Maxwell recently interviewed Mr. Kahn about the evolution of the academy and its potential for changing K-12 education.

How do you think classroom instruction is going to look five years from now?

I'm not sure of the timeline, but the classic teacher in front of the room at a chalkboard lecturing while you have 20 to 35 students at their desks taking notes?I think that model will soon go away. I think that's going to be kind of blown away in favor of a model where every student is working at their own pace and the teacher now has a much higher-value role as someone who is diagnosing students' weaknesses, who is mentoring students both on the academic material, but also mentoring students on becoming good teachers of their peers.

[snip]

Explain what the confluence of technological and educational factors has been at this point in time to allow the Khan Academy to flourish and expand. Why is it working?

I think the breadth of the content on the Khan Academy also gave it an experiential edge, and people learned to trust it. It wasn't just about one concept you learn about here and then you go to another website. [snip].

How does your business model work when all of your content is free? How do you sustain that?

It's a question we constantly ask ourselves. In the medium term, we've had the benefit of some small, medium, and large philanthropists, donors, and foundations to support us. We are a not-for-profit, so we are not a business in the traditional sense. I think there will always be this case that yes, it will require capital to scale this out. We are at 4 million unique users. What will happen when we are at 40 million and want to cover so many different topics and have simulations? That will require capital.

[snip]

Where did the idea of the "flipped classroom" come from?

Very little of this did I think of myself. I also want to emphasize that the flipped classroom is not what we view as the ideal or the endpoint. We view it almost as a transition state. [snip].

We would say, instead of holding fixed the time and date when you learn something and the variable is how well you learn it, we're saying let's hold fixed how well you learn it, and you learn it at a deep level, and what's variable is how long you have to learn it, and when you learn it, and when you revisit the material.

What are the downsides of this approach?

This isn't an attempt to put it on students' plates on their own time. Even if you just talk about that flipped approach, I actually think the problem-solving is the much more important part of the experience than the lecture. [snip].

What are the opportunities that this approach creates for schools to offer more-customized learning for students?

The base assumption of the model is that it's completely customized to the student and it's optimally differentiated, and students are working exactly at their pace. But what it does for schools, ? it allows them to rethink a lot of the assumptions that we've been making about what a school should even be like for the last hundreds of years, which is one teacher, one classroom. [snip]s

Anything to add?

This has absolutely nothing to do with replacing teachers. When we talk about getting lectures out of the room, that's because we think we can move teachers up the value chain. That they are better off forming the bonds and connections. [snip]

It took Earth ten million years to recover from greatest mass extinction

ScienceDaily (May 27, 2012) ? It took some 10 million years for Earth to recover from the greatest mass extinction of all time, latest research has revealed.

Life was nearly wiped out 250 million years ago, with only 10 per cent of plants and animals surviving. It is currently much debated how life recovered from this cataclysm, whether quickly or slowly.

Recent evidence for a rapid bounce-back is evaluated in a new review article by Dr Zhong-Qiang Chen, from the China University of Geosciences in Wuhan, and Professor Michael Benton from the University of Bristol. They find that recovery from the crisis lasted some 10 million years, as explained May 27 in Nature Geoscience.

There were apparently two reasons for the delay, the sheer intensity of the crisis, and continuing grim conditions on Earth after the first wave of extinction.

The end-Permian crisis, by far the most dramatic biological crisis to affect life on Earth, was triggered by a number of physical environmental shocks -- global warming, acid rain, ocean acidification and ocean anoxia. These were enough to kill off 90 per cent of living things on land and in the sea.

Dr Chen said: "It is hard to imagine how so much of life could have been killed, but there is no doubt from some of the fantastic rock sections in China and elsewhere round the world that this was the biggest crisis ever faced by life."

Current research shows that the grim conditions continued in bursts for some five to six million years after the initial crisis, with repeated carbon and oxygen crises, warming and other ill effects.

Some groups of animals on the sea and land did recover quickly and began to rebuild their ecosystems, but they suffered further setbacks. Life had not really recovered in these early phases because permanent ecosystems were not established.

Professor Benton, Professor of Vertebrate Palaeontology at the University of Bristol, said: "Life seemed to be getting back to normal when another crisis hit and set it back again. The carbon crises were repeated many times, and then finally conditions became normal again after five million years or so."

Finally, after the environmental crises ceased to be so severe, more complex ecosystems emerged. In the sea, new groups, such as ancestral crabs and lobsters, as well as the first marine reptiles, came on the scene, and they formed the basis of future modern-style ecosystems.

Professor Benton added: "We often see mass extinctions as entirely negative but in this most devastating case, life did recover, after many millions of years, and new groups emerged. The event had re-set evolution. However, the causes of the killing -- global warming, acid rain, ocean acidification -- sound eerily familiar to us today. Perhaps we can learn something from these ancient events."

(AP) ? Ryder Hesjedal became the first Canadian to win one of cycling's three major tour races, capturing the Giro d'Italia on Sunday by overtaking Spain's Joaquin Rodriguez in the final stage.

Hesjedal started the 21st stage 31 seconds behind the leader, but finished 16 seconds ahead of Rodriguez in the overall standings. He completed the 17.5-mile individual time trial in 34 minutes, 15 seconds. That was good for sixth place ? 20 spots ahead of Rodriguez in the 95th edition of the race.

"It's just been an unreal experience from Day One, what the team was able to do. It's unbelievable," said Hesjedal, whose total race time was 91 hours, 39 minutes, 2 seconds. "This is incredible. It's a dream come true."

He is only the third non-Italian to win the Giro in the past 15 years.

"I couldn't have done it without the team," he said. "I knew I was good when I came into the race. I stayed focused and took every opportunity. The support, the fans at home, it's all unreal. I'd like to thank everyone."

Like the rest of the riders, Hesjedal had been through a demanding mountain ride to the top of the Stelvio Pass in northern Italy on Saturday.

"Yesterday was extremely hard," he said. "I got through it and I knew as I was on the helicopter descending into Milan that I still had a shot. This morning I just felt incredible on my bike and I knew I could do it."

Though he hadn't taken his victory chances seriously before the race, Hesjedal's thinking started to change after he first wore the pink jersey on Stage 7, following a fifth-place finish.

"I never thought I'm going to win," he said. "I was always just focused on having a good ride and I knew that would put me up there. The day I pulled on the jersey for the first time I knew I was good and could accomplish something great and that drove me harder."

It is the first major victory for Hesjedal, whose sixth place in the 2010 Tour de France was the highest Canadian finish in the race in 22 years.

"It can only be a good thing for the sport in Canada and I'm proud of that," the Garmin rider said. "Just the other day someone went into a store in Canada and asked where they could get a pink Garmin jersey...so it still has a way to go!"

Hesjedal and Rodriguez were the last two riders to start. Rodriguez, who had worn the pink jersey for 10 days over the course of the race, ended the stage in 35:02.

"It's only now, with hindsight, that you see the mistakes," said Rodriguez, who rides for Katusha. "Maybe we should have distanced Ryder in the first week. But it went how it went and Ryder won. He was the strongest in the three weeks. I did my best and I don't have any regrets."

Marco Pinotti won the final stage in 33:06, 39 seconds ahead of Britain's Geraint Thomas. It is the sixth stage victory for an Italian rider in this year's Giro, beating the country's 1974 record of five.

"This was a big goal for me," Pinotti said. "I won the last time trial here at the Giro in 2008 and I was second in 2010 and last year it was a big goal. But I crashed two days before and had to go to the hospital. So I've been working for this for a year. For me, it's been a difficult Giro."

Thomas De Gendt, who rode to a memorable solo win Saturday, put in another good performance to finish third overall, 1:39 behind Hesjedal. The Belgian had been 5:40 behind Rodriguez at the start of Stage 20.

Defending champion Michele Scarponi was fourth. It is the first time since 1995 that an Italian has not finished on the podium in the Giro, one of the sport's top three races with the Tour de France and the Spanish Vuelta. Two-time Giro winner Ivan Basso was fifth, 3:44 off the pace.

Taylor Phinney, who won the opening time trial in Denmark, took a wrong turn during the last stage and was forced to turn around. He finished the stage in 16th place in 34:37.

The final stage was shortened by about a mile because of road work.

CIA remembers those lost in covert war on terror

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The CIA is remembering those lost in the hidden, often dangerous world of espionage, adding a new star to the intelligence agency's memorial wall and more than a dozen names to its hallowed Book of Honor.

The new star carved into the wall is for Jeffrey Patneau, a young officer killed in a car crash in Yemen in September 2008.

"Jeff proved that he had boundless talent, courage and innovativeness to offer to our country in its fight against terrorism," said CIA Director David Petraeus at a private ceremony at CIA headquarters this past week.

Petraeus' tribute was the first public identification of Patneau. The stars on the memorial wall at headquarters in Langley, Va., bear no names.

Yemen, the ancestral homeland of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, was the site of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 American sailors. Patneau was part of the fight against militants in the country in a tense year in which the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa was attacked.

With the addition of the star for Patneau, the wall now commemorates the lives of 103 Americans who died in service of the CIA, "never for acclaim, always for country," Petraeus said at the annual event attended by hundreds of employees and family members of those lost. The rememberance came just days ahead of Memorial Day, when the nation remembers its military veterans and those who died in war.

The addition of 15 names to the CIA's Book of Honor means family members can openly acknowledge where their loved ones worked when they died.

Leslianne Shedd was lost when hijackers forced down her plane over the Indian Ocean, killing more than 125 people.

"Everybody who was on the plane with her who survived said she was not at all scared," her sister, Corinne Collie, told The Associated Press on Saturday. "She was saying it's all going to be okay, holding the hand of the person sitting next to her."

Collie says the agency approached her family a year ago, saying it was now possible to acknowledge her death ? likely meaning the cases she had worked on had been wrapped up, or staff she worked with had either retired or were no longer in harm's way. Collie said being able to share what her sister did has been a relief.

"To lose a sister and not be able to talk about the full picture of who she was has been hard," said Collie of Tacoma, Wash. Shedd's cover was working for the State Department.

"The biggest relief is my parents ... get to acknowledge and brag about her, especially my dad," she said.

Like Shedd, most of those honored were killed in the clandestine war on terrorism, the list reading like a grim roll call of terrorist acts of the last three decades. Matthew Gannon was among the victims of the December 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Molly Hardy was killed in the August 1998 suicide bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. She urged others to take cover as she was hit by the blast from an al-Qaida car bomb.

Jacqueline Van Landingham was killed in a terrorist attack in Pakistan in 1995. The CIA did not disclose how she died.

CIA officers face constant threat in Pakistan, hunting and hunted by the Taliban and al-Qaida. They often play a cat-and-mouse game with Pakistan's intelligence service, sometimes able to work with them and sometimes forced to work around them to gather intelligence on al-Qaida's militant diaspora. U.S. officials say it gets support from elements of the Pakistani government.

Five of those remembered were victims of the April 1983 suicide bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut that killed 63 people.

Among the CIA officers lost was Phyliss Nancy Faraci, "one of the last four Americans evacuated from the Mekong Delta when Saigon fell" during the Vietnam War, according to CIA spokesman Todd Ebitz. Faraci had volunteered to work in war-torn Beirut.

Deborah Hixon, a young officer fluent in French who volunteered for a temporary posting there, also died in the attack. Frank Johnston was a 25-year agency veteran who had accepted the assignment though he was close to retirement.

Paramilitary officer James Lewis, who had joined the CIA after his military career, and his wife, Monique Lewis, also were killed. Lewis was "only hours into her first day as an Agency officer when the bomber struck," Ebitz said.

Buehrle, Marlins stay hot, beat Giants

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:21 p.m. ET May 26, 2012

MIAMI (AP) - The Miami Marlins continue to win even with their closer struggling.

Mark Buehrle pitched into the eighth inning and the Miami Marlins moved within a victory of tying the team record for the most in a month with a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.

Giancarlo Stanton hit two doubles and scored twice while Logan Morrison drove in two runs for the Marlins. Miami is a major league best 18-7 in May. The Marlins went 19-10 in August 1997.

"It's outstanding, we're playing some good ball," Buehrle said. "Everything is coming together at the same time. Hopefully we can keep it going into the next month and the couple days we have left in this month."

Buehrle (5-4) allowed two runs and eight hits while throwing 69 of 100 pitches for strikes.

"He's going to give you his heart out there," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I know this man for many years and every time he's out there I guarantee you he's going to give you everything he has. He's worth every penny he's ever made win or lose."

Buehrle was replaced by Steve Cishek after Ryan Theriot tripled to center past a diving Chris Coghlan with one out in the eighth. Cishek retired Melky Cabrera on a ground out, which scored Theriot. Buster Posey grounded out to end the inning.

Heath Bell, who was pulled in the ninth during Friday's game in favor of Cishek as Bell allowed two runs and retired just one batter, continued his struggles. Bell allowed a single to Angel Pagan to open the ninth and after recording an out, he walked the two next two batters to load the bases ending his night early again.

"As a manager the last thing you want to do is take your closer out every day," Guillen said. "That's a very hard feeling and tough situation. We give him every opportunity we can to come out of this once again and he can't get it done."

Bell signed a three-year $27-million contract in the offseason, but has struggled to deliver. He is 2-3 with an 8.47 ERA and four blown saves in 11 chances.

"I don't think anyone else is trying harder than he is," Buehrle said. "Obviously he's frustrated going out there."

Randy Choate relieved Bell and got Nate Schierholtz to fly out scoring Pagan cutting the deficit to 5-3. He struck out Gregor Blanco to end the game. It was Choate's first save since September 23, 2009 when he was with Tampa Bay.

"Two of my hits to lefties this year was to (Blanco) so I was a little pumped that I finally got him out," Choate said. "I tried treating it like any other appearance. Obviously there is way more adrenaline going because the crowd is going nuts and the bases are loaded, but I tried to take it as get the lefties out and get out of the game."

Madison Bumgarner (5-4) took the loss allowing five runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

"Just missing today," Bumgarner said.

Blanco had three of San Francisco's nine hits.

"I feel really good," Blanco said. "I've been working on hitting more balls on the gorund and it's been great. I'm more confident. This game is all about opportunities and I know I can do good things."

With one out in the third inning and the scored tied at 1, Jose Reyes and Omar Infante each reached with base hits and successfully pulled off a double steal with Hanley Ramirez batting. Ramirez followed with a single to left scoring Reyes. After Stanton walked, Morrison grounded into what appeared to be an inning-ending double play, but Emmanuel Burriss' throw bounced passed first baseman Brett Pill allowing Infante and Ramirez to score giving the Marlins a 4-1 lead.

"(Bumgarner) had that one inning," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That's what's been happening the last couple of days. We're just trying to limit the damage."

Stanton doubled to leadoff the second and scored on a single by Donovan Solano for the Marlins first run of the game. He doubled again to leadoff the sixth and scored on a Morrison double to deep center field.

"You know what you want to do (with Stanton), I just wasn't able to do it," Bumgarner said. "I just didn't make pitches to him. It's not any different than anybody else. I just missed and when I did he hit it."

The Giants tied the game at 1 with a base hit by Blanco as Burriss slide into home safely, narrowly beating Stanton's throw from right.

NOTES: Guillen said after the game he will consider removing Bell from the closer role for the second time this season. "Right now it's not working," Guillen said. "I'm going to sleep over it and see what ideas we come up with." ... Giants LF Melky Cabrera came into the game hitting .692 (9 of 13) against Buehrle, but went 0 for 3 with a strikeout. ... Giants ace Tim Lincecum fell to 2-5 with a 6.41 ERA following Friday's loss. "He's taking it hard, believe me," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Lincecum's struggles. "We want to send a message that we know that he's giving it everything he's got." ... Stanton is hitting .333 (32 of 96) in May. ... The Marlins will send RHP Ricky Nolasco (5-2, 4.31 ERA) to the mound Sunday in the series finale as the Giants will counter with RHP Matt Cain (4-2, 2.94 ERA). .
