There are alarming numbers just out about skin cancer. A surge of young women are developing the deadliest form. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic looked at skin cancer rates among women under 40 in one county in Minnesota, and they found that between 1979 and 2009 melanoma rates increased eight times over."Melanoma is a very scary thing to hear," said Hunt.It is something young people are hearing far more often. The Mayo Clinic looked at skin cancer rates among women under 40 in one county in Minnesota and they found that between 1979 and 2009 melanoma rates increased eight times over.It is a snapshot of a national problem and the likeliest culprits are sunburns and tanning."The rise in tanning bed behavior over the years is probably a major contributor," said Mayo Clinic dermatologist Jerry Brewer. As an undercover ABC investigation found, tanning salons can gloss over the risk. Doctors say it is disturbing that a whole generation seems to be missing the point that tans and burns can cause cancer.Hunt, a previous user of tanning beds, says she has sworn off them and now wears sunscreen. She says she shows off her scar to friends as a warning.Doctors say everyone should know the warning sign of melanoma. Anyone who finds a mole on their body should check the asymmetry. Moles with unequal sides are suspicious. Also, check the color of the mole. Different shades of brown, red and black are bad. The diameter should be no bigger than a pencil eraser, and it shouldn't be elevated from the skin. Those with concerns about a mole should contact their doctor.
