Is Bruce Banner Headed To 'Iron Man 3?'

'Avengers' stars discuss the possibility with MTV News.

With anticipation for upcoming blockbuster "Marvel's The Avengers" hitting a fever pitch after last week's world premiere and the first round of very positive reactions from tastemakers, we might as well start looking ahead toward the future and the next wave of Marvel films like "Captain America 2," "Thor 2" and "Iron Man 3."

"Iron Man 3" is first up in production, with Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle and recently announced villain Ben Kingsley. Now given the fact that the film will take place after the action in "The Avengers," we can't help but assume and hope that a few of Tony Stark's new friends from "Avengers" make appearances in Downey Jr's third Iron Man outing, particularly since Stark and Bruce Banner seem to form a very close friendship in Whedon's "Avengers."

When MTV News caught up with the man should be making that appearance, Mark Ruffalo, we asked him how Bruce Banner might end up in "Iron Man 3".

"On a horse," Ruffalo joked about how he should make a cameo. "What if Hulk had a whale that he road?"

"Are you in Iron Man 3?" Johansson asked.

"No, not that I know of," Ruffalo said. "That's a great idea."

"You never know until the last minute," Johansson pointed out. "They could just call you up."

"I'm sure there's a way for me to find my way into that," Ruffalo said.

"You should," Johansson said.

"We work well together," Ruffalo said of his rapport with Downey Jr.

"I think you guys are fabulous together," Johansson said. "And your scenes [in "Avengers"] are some of my faves.

"I'm a good foil for him," Ruffalo added.

"Certainly," Johansson agreed. "And you share something."

"Will you talk to Kevin?" Ruffalo asked Johansson, requesting her to put some pressure on Marvel chief Kevin Feige.

"I will," she promised.

"I hope I can join you guys," Ruffalo said. "I think Bruce Banner would be a nice [addition].

"Well now that it's been revealed to us that Bruce is a possibility, why wouldn't we call him for every job, is what I'm wondering," Johansson said.

"Right," said Ruffalo. "He's easygoing until..."

"Until you really need him," Johansson offered.

Gillmor Gang: Moe, Larry, and Curly

Gillmor Gang test patternThe Gillmor Gang ? Robert Scoble, Dan Farber, Kevin Marks, and Steve Gillmor ? have a lot to work with this week: Instagram, a Google+ redesign, and Ann Romney joining Twitter. But if Larry is Larry, who are Moe and Curly? @dbfarber makes a good case for Twitter owning the realtime media; if you make it on Twitter, you can make it anywhere. We don't know Moe's business model, but who cares. That leaves Zuckerberg as Curly, the intellectual whose empire keeps growing no matter what mistakes he seems to make. In fact, those mistakes usually turn out to be ephemeral. Lose trust with overwhelming growth, buy the most phatic startup and its 30 million users. Facebook is betting only a few will bolt, and where are they gonna go anyway? The Three Stooges are beating each other up, but what they're really doing is keeping Microsoft boxed out of the social party. Nyuk nyuck nyuck.

Sprint will activate LTE on the 800MHz band in 2014

Image
Sprint's Steve Elfman has said that the company's intending to activate an LTE service over its 800MHz spectrum by 2014. Big Yellow's already received 3GPP certification to turn Band 26 into super-fast mobile internet, the only remaining regulatory hurdle left to overcome is a thumbs-up from the FCC. The due date isn't set in stone, as it'll depend entirely on how quickly the company can force current iDEN users to migrate to its CDMA Direct Connect service. Meanwhile, LTE service in Atlanta, Baltimore, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City and San Antonio will activate across next year, with the company confident that it'll be able to keep pace with AT&T and Verizon's services by offloading traffic onto Clearwire's TD-LTE Network which should go live by June 2013. We can only guess that after that the announcement was done, Mr. Elfman looked at a picture of Philip Falcone and had to step outside for a little cry.

Nokia Lumia 900 data connectivity fix available now, three days early

Nokia Lumia 900 data connectivity fix available now, three days early
Good news came late today for all those Lumia 900 owners out there. It appears that Nokia has officially released the software update to resolve the handset's data connectivity issues -- a full three days early, in fact. Users may download the software through either Zune on the PC or Windows Phone 7 Connector on the Mac. For those who'd prefer to swap out their handset at an AT&T store, you have between now and April 21st to complete the exchange. Naturally, the limited-time offer remains in place for all those who purchase a Lumia 900 before April 21st to receive a $100 credit to their AT&T phone bill, courtesy of Nokia. Quite the graceful recovery, indeed.

Mexico cartels, US battle in classified ads

AP, file

More than 242 pounds of marijuana seized from a vehicle that tried to enter the U.S. near San Diego in 2010. The driver said he had responded to a newspaper ad allegedly placed by drug smugglers to recruit drivers to unwittingly take drugs across the border.

By Associated Press

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The war on drugs is going to the classified sections of Mexican newspapers.

Smugglers have long advertised work as security guards, housecleaners and cashiers, telling applicants they must drive company cars to the United States. They aren't told the cars are loaded with drugs.

Starting this week, U.S. Immigration and Customs and Enforcement began buying ad space in Tijuana newspapers to warn jobseekers they might be unwitting pawns.

"Why don't we do the same thing that (cartels are) doing? It's successful for them. Why wouldn't it be successful for us?" Lester Hayes, a group supervisor for ICE in San Diego, recalls his agents telling him.

There have been 39 arrests since February 2011 at San Diego's two border crossings tied to the ads for seemingly legitimate jobs, according to ICE, which hadn't seen such significant numbers before.

One killed every half hour in Mexico drug-related violence

Those arrests have yielded 3,400 pounds of marijuana, 75 pounds of cocaine and 100 pounds of methamphetamine ? a tiny fraction of total seizures but enough to convince U.S. authorities that smugglers are increasingly turning to the recruitment technique.

Drug smugglers always look to exploit weak links along the 1,954-mile border, even if the window of opportunity is brief. In the past several years, they have turned to makeshift boats on the Pacific Ocean and ultralight aircraft in the deserts of California and Arizona. In the San Diego area, there has been a spike in teenagers strapping drugs to their bodies to walk across the border from Tijuana.

Some suddenly popular techniques are limited to particular pockets of the border. ICE has not spotted significant spikes in newspaper ads outside of San Diego.

Guillermo Arias / AP, file

Motorists line up to cross the border into the U.S. from Tijuana at the U.S. Customs and Border protection port of entry in San Ysidro, on July 17, 2008.

Lower expenses for traffickers
Ads that authorities connect to drug smugglers appear innocuous. They offer work in the United States ? an invitation that only people who can cross the border legally need apply ? with a phone number and sometimes a location to apply in person.

New hires are told to drive company cars across the border, typically to a fast-food restaurant or shopping center in San Diego, according to ICE. When they arrive, they are often told there will be no work after all that day and must leave the car and walk back to Mexico after being paid a small amount.

The drivers are typically paid $50 to $200 a trip ? much less than the $1,500 to $5,000 that seasoned smugglers are typically paid for such trips, Hayes said.

For drug traffickers, the tactic lowers expenses and, they hope, makes drivers appear less nervous when questioned by border inspectors, said Millie Jones, an assistant special agent in charge of investigations for ICE in San Diego.

Cross-border methamphetamine trade booms amid Mexico's 'war on drugs'

The drugs are stashed in the usual ways. Fifteen pounds of methamphetamine were found in a pickup truck's phony exhaust pipe in November. More than 250 pounds of marijuana were discovered in a van's overhead compartment last April.

More than 200 pounds of marijuana were found in vacuum-sealed plastic bags smothered in grease. Drugs are typically mixed with mustard, ketchup and fabric fresheners to defuse odors and ward off dogs used by authorities.

For years, U.S. authorities have bought newspaper space and broadcast airtime south of the border to deter illegal border crossings. The Border Patrol has a long-running media campaign in Mexico and Central America that includes musical "corridos," short documentaries and public service announcements.

The ICE ads that began appearing Sunday in classified sections of Tijuana's Frontera and El Mexicano are nothing fancy. Bold black letters say, "Warning! Drug traffickers are announcing jobs for drivers to go to the United States. Don't fall victim to this trap."

Mexican newspapers have faced online competitors but the papers' classified sections are relatively robust compared to U.S. publications.

Desperate for work, people often tricked
Victor Clark, director of Tijuana's Binational Center for Human Rights, doubts the ads will work without specific instructions on how to confirm whether a company is legitimate, such as calling an ICE telephone number.

"It's very difficult for someone who is unemployed to know whether it's a trap," Clark said. "I don't think many people are inclined to investigate if they are desperate for work."

Mexico arrests Knights Templar cartel chief

The cases can be challenging for prosecutors because drivers may not know they are smuggling drugs.

Debra Hartman, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office in San Diego, declined to say how many cases have been prosecuted or cite any examples. Rachel Cano, assistant chief of the San Diego County district attorney's southern branch, said each case is different.

"Just like any other case, a theft case, we look at all of the facts and if there are sufficient facts that meet the elements of a crime and we can prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, then we file charges," Cano said.

Guadalupe Valencia, a San Diego defense attorney, said the ads by U.S. authorities might inadvertently help defendants. Attorneys will argue it is an acknowledgement that people are often tricked.

"It has always been my opinion that there are many unknowing couriers," he said. "The challenge for the prosecution is you always have to prove knowledge."

Jennifer Lawrence Slammed By PETA For Squirrel Skinning (and Saying "Screw PETA")

Jennifer Lawrence is the latest celebrity to come under fire from PETA after she recalled in Rolling Stone how she skinned a squirrel in the movie Winter's Bone.

The Hunger Games star is receiving serious backlash from the organization after revealing that the scene wasn't fake and that she actually did skin a squirrel.

"I should say it wasn't real, for PETA," she confessed. "But screw PETA."

Cute Jennifer Lawrence Picture

The Oscar nominee's comment was likely not meant to show any disrespect, but PETA is fighting back. Says the the organization's president, Ingrid Newkirk:

"She's young, and the plight of animals somehow hasn't yet touched her heart. As Henry David Thoreau said, 'The squirrel you kill in jest, dies in earnest.'"

"One day I hope she will try to make up for any pain she might cause any animal who did nothing but try to eke out a humble existence in nature."

"When people kill animals, it is the animals who are 'screwed,' not PETA."

Lawrence, who will next appear in The House at the End of the Street, has yet to comment on PETA's response to her confession of harming an animal.

The big winner in all of this? Khloe Kardashian. PETA has a new target!

Biden: Al Franken is a 'leading legal scholar' ? Pat Dollard

Apr 11, 2012 Angelia Phillips

Washington Post:

Vice President Joe Biden described former Saturday Night Live comedian, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., as a ?leading legal scholar,? presumably in the Senate, today.

?He has been one of the leading legal scholars,? Biden said of Franken today, according to the pool report. He also said that Franken ?is deadly serious? as a senator. He made the comments while recalling concerns that then-candidate Franken could not be taken seriously as a Senate candidate given his SNL work.

Franken?s comedic spirit got him in trouble on Washington. ?This isn?t ?Saturday Night Live,? Al,? Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had to remind the freshman senator after Franken made faces while McConnell spoke during the Supreme Court nomination process for Elena Kagan.

Kagan is now regarded as an able defender of Obamacare, which could be struck after oral arguments last month seemed to indicate that five of the nine justices regard it as unconstitutional.

VOIP Phone Service Is Changing The Way We Communicate | Voip ...

The way we communicate has changed dramatically and nowhere is that more evident than through the telephone system. The old analog method is competing with new breakthrough technology that provides a voice activated connection, used over the internet. Part of this new breakthrough technology is VOIP Phone.

Gone are the days of the old rotary style telephone, the touch tone, or cordless phones that we once used. The widespread use of electronic devices are much more adept to the different internet network systems. There are so many things that businesses can do with this innovative way of calling colleagues, like sharing information, scheduling meeting, and maintaining databases.

Voice over internet protocol is what the term VOIP represents. The original intent of this service was meant for businesses, bringng together all forms of communications available, so they could be used with any handset, or cell phone. The public got its first chance to use it in 2004.

The connectivity process is linked by connecting to a network with an IP address. The connection can be made by using either, wifi or Ethernet. The internet uses voice over or data transfer as a means of connection. If a customer decides, they can use this instead of the telephone company for its service. The integrity of this method of communication is secured.

The benefits of using it are immediate. The cost to use this technology is usually lower than the normal service through the phone company. In addition, regular analog phones must connect to the phone company while, this technology connects to cable modems and routers.

The connectivity availability is second to none because their service travels with them and the service is uninterrupted . They can go anywhere on the globe and still be connected. If, they can connect to the internet they can receive calls.

Some disadvantages are that 911, 411, or some other services are not always available. Another problem is the loss of power during storms since, the service cannot operate under those conditions. They also may not have directory assistance or white page listing. These are some of the things that are being taken into consideration with the hope of future resolution.

Right now, anyone wanting to use this phone system should have access to the internet and whatever hardware required. Request call back, once the service is complete to make sure everything is up and running. As soon as, the go ahead is assured start calling friends, family and see what it has to offer. VOIP Phone operating ability is one hundred per cent guaranteed.

Internet Marketing Principals Put Into Action

GD Star Rating
loading...

Many companies spam their clients and people, but companies that advertise through spamming methods are not following the internet marketing principals that would best market their products. One of the largest complaints that people have about the Internet is spam, and they ignore anything that looks even remotely spammy.

An important means of reaching people through the internet is often done through target marketing. This is the idea that instead of spamming one hundred people and hoping that two like your product, you focus on people and online groups who are already interested in similar goods or services.

It?s true that by doing this you will significantly decrease the amount of exposure you get, but this also means that you will reduce the amount of bad publicity you get as well. All of the people that you sent email Internet Marketing Principals Put Into Actionadvertisements to that weren?t interested in your merchandise are going to think that your company is merely one of those fly by night spamming operations.

Even if you?re not, it won?t change the way they think of your product and their perception of your business practices. However, if you can focus your marketing ideas on groups of people, who you know are interested in similar things, then you increase your likelihood of having good corresponding sales figures. Internet marketing principals are not that different from other means of promoting something.

One of the more important rules is to know what people will pay for your product. Too many times people don?t properly estimate the value of their product or service.
The first time many people see an advertisement or commercial, they form an opinion of what is being marketed. If they see something they think is priced too low, they might decide that it?s made with lower quality parts and decide they don?t want to buy it. If they think it?s priced too highly then they may think it out of their price range and discount it immediately.

This is why it?s never a bad idea to look around online at what your competitors may be charging for similar products. The idea behind this is to get your price slightly lower than what they are charging; so that people think they?re getting a good deal on something. Of course, make sure that it?s not so good of a deal that they start wondering about quality.

If you are still having problems pricing your items, then you could go to a message board and see if there are any discussions that might give you an idea of what people are willing to pay. Many times this is the kind of research that large public relations firms do for their clients.

Remember to keep everything you do as professional as possible and don?t be too pushy. You shouldn?t have a problem learning how to safely and easily promote your company, especially if you put these internet marketing principals into action.

Fast Booze

Chipotle is primarily known as a mid-scale burrito purveyor, but, as fast-food restaurants go, it's also a great place to drink. Though it offers a selection of domestic and imported bottled beers, the obvious choice is the margarita, mixed by hand in front of your eyes. While sweet, it's about as good a margarita as you'll get in any average bar, with slightly higher-quality liquor than the Mr. Boston-caliber swill you'd get in most places. Though the drinks are pricey?$6.50 for a roughly 12-ounce margarita, $5 for a bottle of Coors Light?cheapskates can glory in the fact that, at Chipotle, you're not allowed to tip your bartender. They're good at keeping the customer satisfied, though: I ordered my third margarita two minutes before closing, and not only did the counterwoman serve me with a smile, she also free-poured.

University of Guam, Scripps sign exchange agreement

THE University of Guam and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography entered into a memorandum of understanding yesterday, which will create a working relationship involving exchanges in resources, research and student education for the two institutions.

UOG President Dr. Robert Underwood and Dr. Doug Bartlett, deep sea microbiologist and deputy director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, signed the MOU yesterday afternoon in the President?s Conference Room at the UOG campus.

Also present during the signing was Dr. Helen Whippy, UOG senior vice president for Academic and Student Affairs, and Scripps engineer Kevin Hardy, designer of the unmanned lander vehicles used in the Challenger Deep expedition.

Both Barlett and Hardy were part of the Challenger Deep science team that accompanied acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron on his recent expedition to the Mariana Trench.?

As outlined in the MOU, the two institutions will cooperate to further the development of basic scientific and applied research with goals of advancing research in ocean science, gaining a more fundamental understanding of the oceans, and benefiting society at large.

Exchange

At the core of the MOU is the exchange of academic and scientific knowledge, UOG indicated in a press release. That entails the exchanging of researchers, scientists, faculty members and graduate students; scientific information in fields of mutual interest; exchanging scholars for lectures, talks, conferences, colloquia, symposia and sharing of experiences; implementing cooperative research programs; and making facilities and equipment (including research vessels) of one party available to researchers from the other party, among a number of activities.

?The value of any MOU of this kind depends on more than just the goodwill, but the active involvement of both parties to look for opportunities in the future,? said Barlett, highlighting some ideas that went beyond the research into the Deepsea Challenge expedition.

Barlett expressed his optimism that the partnership would provide productive interactions in the form of proposals, funded grants, and exchanges involving research and student education.

?It?d be wonderful to have some students from Guam taking some of our classes and some of our students coming here,? he added.

Trent Consultants News Studying Cancer In Pet Dogs

? April 9, 2012Posted in: USA

Article by trent Consultants Dog Korea

Trent Consultants News: A team of scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, USA, says that studying pet dogs with cancer could yield valuable information on how to diagnose and treat human cancers. In the journal PLoS Medicine, the team discusses an ongoing initiative in which spontaneously occurring cancers in dogs are being studied to help inform the development of new cancer drugs, devices and imaging strategies for human cancer patients.
Estimates suggest that as many as 1 million new diagnoses of cancer occur in dogs in the United States each year. The condition is treated much like human cancer, with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Pet owners are often motivated to pursue novel and investigational treatments with their veterinarians.
The team of scientists at the Centre for Cancer Research at the NCI, led by Dr. Chand Khanna, believes that studying these new therapies in clinical trials with dogs may yield insights into how to improve care for human patients. Naturally occurring tumors in dogs have clinical and biological similarities to the human disease.
Khanna and colleagues say that a pet owner?s decision to pursue an experimental therapy is influenced by a number of factors, especially the possible risks and benefits of the new therapy and the reduced costs for care provided by the investigational trial.
Additionally, they say, ?many pet owners are motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of cancer treatment for future human and canine patients.?
The study of cancer biology and treatment in animals with naturally occurring cancers, known as comparative oncology, is not a new concept. Over the last 30-40 years investigators have used this approach to advance understanding and treatment of several human cancers, such as bone cancer (osteosarcoma), lymphoma, and melanoma. Adapted from materials provided by Public Library of Science, via EurekAlert!, a service of AAAS.

What is Payroll, actually? and How can it affect a business? | PATC

In any company, payroll will be the total sum of all of the financial records of salaries for an employee, any wages, bonuses that may be given to the employee and of course

any deductions that may be taken from the employee?s salary. But in accounting terms payrollis slightly different. In accounting terms payroll means the amount that is

Payslip Example 2012

Payslip Example 2012 in South Africa

paid to employees for any services that they have provided during a certain period of time. This could be a month, a week or a day etc.

How does payroll affect a company?

Payroll plays a very important role in any company, no matter what the size of the company. In any company payroll affects the net income by way of taxes paid and payroll is also subject to certain laws in the country. Speak to your professional accountant to find out what laws there are.

But business revolves around its most important asset ? its staff. Payroll can enormously affect the morale and productivity of a business, as all employees can feel either very negative or positive in response to possible payroll errors or irregularities. To create a good company morale with the employees it is vital that the company Payroll Department pays the employees accurately and timeously. This doesn?t matter how small or large a company is. Part of this exercise for the Payroll Department is also to make sure that the correct deductions are taken from the employees salary but they these deductions are also remitted in a timely manner too. This would include any salary payments, tax withholdings and any other deductions that may come from a paycheck.

Frequency

Most companies pay their employees at regular intervals, so that the regular income stream will help to benefit the employee in the form of their own monthly financial management plans. However, the intervals of payment may vary from company to company, industry to industry or even from the seniority of the employee concerned. The most common payroll frequencies are: daily, weekly, monthly, semi-monthly and some companies pay their employees very quarter.

Outsourcing

Payroll can often be a time consuming activity for companies, so to get around this they often outsource their payroll activities to a specialist payroll company or even their professional accountant.

How is your Payroll Department?

Picture of a possible Payroll department

This can often lead to a reduction in the cost of a company managing their own payroll. Why is this though? Simply put, you can save on the cost of a fully trained payroll employee, and software that might be needed to process the payroll. Often taxes may need to be filed consistently and accurately to different regulatory agencies ? depending on the companies industry. This may add to the complication of the payroll department. An example of this could be the difficulties a payroll? department may have in working out the sales employees salaries when they are paid via a commission structure.

With the changing tax laws it is also often difficult for companies payroll departments to continually monitor these changes and make the necessary changes timeously. Hence another reason to outsource the payroll needs of a company.

Conclusion

Payroll means the sum of all the financial records of salaries for an employee. Payroll can affect morale of a company drastically if it is not done so in a timeous and accurate manner. This could lead to possible employees working inefficiently too. It is for this main reason and due to complicated payroll processes that many companies decide to outsource their payroll needs to their professional accountants or a payroll management company.

Pakistani troops dig for 117 missing in avalanche

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistani soldiers dug into a massive avalanche in a mountain battleground close to the Indian border on Saturday, searching for at least 117 of their colleagues buried when the wall of snow engulfed a military complex.

More than 12 hours after the disaster at the entrance to the Siachen Glacier, no survivors had been found.

"We are waiting for news and keeping our fingers crossed," said army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas.

Hundreds of troops, sniffer dogs and mechanical equipment were at the scene, but were struggling to make much headway into the avalanche, which crashed down onto the rear headquarters building in the Gayari sector early in the morning, burying it under some 21 meters (70 feet) of snow, said Abbas.

"It's on a massive scale," he said. "Everything is completely covered."

Siachen is on the northern tip of the divided Kashmir region claimed by both India and Pakistan.

The accident highlighted the risks of deploying troops to one of the most inhospitable places on earth.

The thousands of troops from both nations stationed there brave viciously cold temperatures, altitude sickness, high winds and isolation for months at a time. Troops have been deployed at elevations of up to 6,700 meters (22,000 feet) and have skirmished intermittently since 1984, though the area has been quiet since a cease-fire in 2003. The glacier is known as the world's highest battlefield.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani expressed his shock at the incident, which he said "would in no way would undermine the high morale of soldiers and officers."

The headquarters in Gayari, situated at around 4,572 meters (15,000 feet) is the main gateway through which troops and supplies pass on their to other more remote outposts in the sector. It is situated in a valley between two high mountains, close to a military hospital, according to an officer who was stationed there in 2003.

"I can't comprehend how an avalanche can reach that place," said the officer, who didn't give his name because he is not authorized to speak to the media. "It was supposed to be safe."

More soldiers have died from the weather than combat on the glacier, which was uninhabited before troops moved there.

Conflict there began in 1984 when India occupied the heights of the 78-kilometer (49-mile)-long glacier, fearing Pakistan wanted to claim the territory. Pakistan also deployed its troops. Both armies remain entrenched despite the cease-fire, costing the poverty-stricken countries many millions of dollars each year.

Pakistan and India have fought three wars since the partition of the subcontinent on independence from Britain in 1947. Two of the wars have been over Kashmir, which both claim in its entirety.

How the Modern Physics was invented in the 17th century, part 2: source of fundamental laws

Note: this is the second of three parts of the essay. The first part was published yesterday and the third will be published tomorrow (see links at the bottom of the page).

What was the source of the originators? faith in fundamental laws?

Einstein wrote about Kepler, who ?lived in an age in which the reign of law in nature was by no means an accepted certainty. How great must his faith in a uniform law have been, to have given him the strength to devote ten years of hard and patient work to the empirical investigation of the movement of the planets and the mathematical laws of that movement, entirely on his own, supported by no one and understood by very few!? [11]

All the originators shared such a faith in fundamental laws, but what was the source of this faith? Most probably, it was the genuine religious faith which all the four greats did have as well. Connection between these two kinds of faith was discovered by a Marxist historian ? and, sure, atheist ? Edgar Zilsel in his seminal research ?The Genesis of the Concept of Physical Law? (1942), where he showed that the expressions ?Physical Law? and ?Law of Nature? emerged in the 17th century within Biblical worldview by transforming an idea of the Universe governed by laws decreed by God into a basic notion of scientific discourse. [12]

Portrait of Galileo Galilei by Justus Sustermans painted in 1636. National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London.

Portrait of Galileo Galilei by Justus Sustermans painted in 1636. National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London.

Galileo, who discovered the first fundamental law of modern physics ? the law of free fall ? never used terms like ?Physical Law? and ?Law of Nature? in his original Italian publications, instead he used terms like ?ragione? (proportion, ratio) or ?principio? (principle). But in his ?theological? letters of 1613-15 to his disciple and to his patron Galileo started the transformation.[13] Here is a summary of his views:

The Scripture and Nature both derive from God, the Scripture as His dictation, the Nature as the obedient executrix of God?s commands. The aim of the Scripture is to persuade humans of those propositions which are necessary for their service to God and salvation. To adapt to the understanding of unlearned people, the Scripture speaks many things which differ from the bare meaning of words, and it would be blasphemy to accept them literally by attributing to God hands, human feelings like anger, regret, and forgetfulness.

Nature, on the other hand, never transgresses the laws imposed upon her, and does not care a whit whether her abstruse reasons and modes of operation are understandable to humans. God has furnished us with senses, language, and intellect not to bypass their use and give us by other means the information we can obtain with them. Therefore, whatever sensory experience and necessary demonstrations prove to us concerning natural phenomena it should not be questioned on account of Scripture?s words which appear to have a different meaning. This is especially so for the phenomena about which we can read only very few words. The Scripture does not contain even the names of all the planets, and so it was not written to teach us astronomy.

This worldview in fact contains the double postulate of the fundamental science. There are unbreakable laws governing all the abstruse reasons in Nature, and humans have free abilities to understand those reasons by means of their senses, language, and intellect.

Galileo?s ?laws imposed by God upon Nature? by the end of the 17th century transforms into just ?laws of Nature?, and, as Zilsel found, this transformation was made mainly by deeply religious scientists like Descartes and Boyle.

It was the last publication of the 50-yrs old Zilsel in the series published after he arrived to the USA having escaped from Austria occupied by Nazis. In 1944 Zilsel committed suicide, so we don?t know what he was thinking about the gap between his earlier Marxist explanation of the Scientific Revolution and his own hint to an anti-Marxist explanation.

The very role of Biblical worldview in the thinking of the first modern physicists is more important than the specific phrase ?law of Nature?. An atheist Zilsel wrote about ?the law-metaphor originated in the Bible?, but in a religious worldview most ways to talk about God are metaphorical.

There is no much sense to discuss specific denominations of the four originators. While being genuinely religious they were no less genuinely free and independent in their thinking both in science and in religion, which resulted in their being at odds with theological officialdoms. The only denomination all the four could be reasonably affiliated with was ?Biblical theism?, since the only source of religious authority they did not question was the Bible while they felt free to question its interpretations including translations from the original. It is most clearly manifested by Newton?s dissertation on corruptions of Scripture. For the four originators the Bible was as original reality as the Nature was.

The connection of the two faiths in the originators? minds made the double postulate of the fundamental science to resonate with the most general postulates the Bible teaches ? acknowledgement of the supreme Creator-Lawgiver and the personal freedom of a human endowed by Himself, who has created man in His image and likeness.

Regardless of religious diversity in Europe this Biblical postulate had been instilled and dissolved in European culture, which more properly could be named the Biblical culture, since the Bible is the most common element of European sub-cultures, as different as Finnish and Italian, Russian and British. Legitimate offspring of the Biblical culture includes unaffiliated believers as well as atheists, since the freedom of conscience, or separation of state and church were introduced into Western social agenda by profoundly biblical people like the Puritans.

One should not think that in that old time there was no atheists at all. Atheism was well established back in the time of Archimedes, ? in Epicureanism. An overt atheist was a colleague and friend of Newton ? Edmond Halley, and there were many more covert atheists. But an historical fact is that there was no atheists among the originators of modern physics. As far as their attitude toward the Bible is concerned they would probably agree with the next great fundamental physicist Maxwell, who in the very beginning of his scientific career wrote to his close friend:

?Now, my great plan is to let nothing be willfully left unexamined. Nothing is to be holy ground consecrated to Stationary Title, whether positive or negative.? Christianity?that is, the religion of the Bible?is the only scheme or form of belief which disavows any possessions on such a tenure. Here alone all is free. You may fly to the ends of the world and find no God but the Author of Salvation. You may search the Scriptures and not find a text to stop you in your explorations.? [14]

In the same free spirit, a quarter century later, Maxwell declined the invitation to join a society whose stated aim was to defend ?the great truths revealed in Holy Scripture ? against the opposition of Science falsely so called.? He explained: ?I think that the results which each man arrives at in his attempts to harmonize his science with his Christianity ought not to be regarded as having any significance except to the man himself, and to him only for a time, and should not receive the stamp of a society. For it is of the nature of science, especially of those branches of science which are spreading into unknown regions to be continually ??.[15] Here the draft ends, but one can guess that Maxwell was to continue something like ?? to be continually asking new questions and questioning accustomed answers?.

In the next generation the fundamental double postulate was laconically formulated by Einstein: ?Subtle is the Lord, but malicious He is not?. Having undergone deep religiosity as a child, adult Einstein was far away from any churchlike life, but presenting his ?cosmic religion? he wrote that ?the beginning of cosmic religious feeling already appear? in many of the Psalms of David and in some of the Prophets?.[16]

While in Einstein?s time one could have a faith in fundamental physical laws just because quite a few laws had been discovered, it was not so in the 16th century when there were none. Hence it seems to be the key fact that all the originators of the modern physics were Biblical theists, whose fundamental worldview was supported by their Biblical ?pre-physics? (to avoid words ?prejudgment? and ?metaphysics?). Their creativity in fundamental science was supported by their intellectual and spiritual experience in dealing with invisible reality, by the parallel between non-evident laws in ethics and in physics.

It resulted in Galileo?s idea of the two Great Books by the same Author ? the book of Scripture and the book of Nature, which are to be properly translated from their original languages into vernacular and into the language of sensual experience. Hence Galileo?s famous words about the mathematical language as the original language of the book of Nature.

Now what about the two above-mentioned books on the origin of modern science (see Part 1 of this essay, published yesterday)? H. F. Cohen?s explanation [1] not only comprehensively ignores religion as a major factor in the history of science, but also ignores a key result of ?The Genesis of the Concept of Physical Law? by Edgar Zilsel.

On the other hand P. Harrison not only believes in the paramount importance of religion, he tries to demonstrate that theological discussions about the Fall of Man were of vital importance for the Rise of Modern Science. Since he presents no evidence that scientists the originators were involved in such discussions, one can be skeptical regarding such a role of theology, while theologians themselves could well be interested in the supernatural status of natural science.

As to the theistic originators they apparently were too focused on their natural philosophy to digress from it into pure theology. It does not mean, however, that the story about the Tree of Knowledge on the very first pages of their Holy Scripture was insignificant in their spiritual evolution.

A would-be physicist by the Tree of Knowledge

Let?s look at this biblical story through the eyes of not a theologian but an adolescent biblical theist endowed with a talent to seek knowledge about Nature, that is extraordinary curiosity and independent thinking. After all, or, rather, first and foremost, the story about the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is the first biblical story where human being is acting as a free subject.

First, our smart reader would grasp that this story is about knowledge in general, for to do good in a specific situation one have to know the working of this situation, for example, to know what would heal the specific sickness of a suffering person.

Second, our reader would grasp that God?s words not to eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge lest to become mortal, was not an outright prohibition but a kind of forewarning, for God?s prohibiting commandment (?Thou shalt not ??) didn?t refer to consequences of its violation.

And, third, a potential researcher of nature could easily comprehend the main motivation of Eve to eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge because of longing for knowledge, a basic situation of fundamental scientific inquiry.

Since it was the very first action of Eva, apparently both her freedom of choice and her longing for knowledge had been provided to her by her Creator. Hence a potential fundamental scientist would feel free to be dying for a new piece of knowledge about the Universe and would accept his responsibility for this.

Even within Biblical cultural domain there is evidence of such a support from the Bible since its role is somewhat different in different Christian denominations, being most prominent in Protestantism. The idea that Protestant worldview was beneficial to the science was based on the statistical fact of the disproportionately high contribution of Protestants to science since 17th century. [17]

This fact is supported by statistics of religious background of Nobel laureates (1901-2002): those with Catholic background are 9% of Nobel laureates and 17% of the world population, while those with Protestant background are 30% of Nobel laureates and 7% of the world population.[18] Such a difference looks like a result of a few centuries of stronger development of science in the Protestant world, but in the early 17th century science in the Catholic world was no weaker than in the Protestant one. And such a developing disparity should be explained.

Despite all the differences within Biblical civilization, much greater was the difference of other civilizations in ability to adopt modern science. Instructive is comparison between Russian and Chinese Empires.

China was much more advanced with its? great inventions in technology, traditions in philosophy and astronomical observations. The modern science was brought to China by Jesuit missionaries back in 17th century and was welcomed by Chinese emperor, who appointed a missionary his scientific adviser.

More than a century later, the modern science was brought to Russia due to Peter the Great. It started with bringing outstanding scientists from Europe, including Euler and Bernoulli. However very soon a powerful indigenous figure of M. Lomonosov appeared, and the first world-class results in exact sciences ? N. Lobachevski?s geometry and D. Mendeleev?s periodic table of elements ? emerged a century before Chinese noticeable contribution into the modern science.

So the strong disparity could be explained by the fact that Russia belonged to Biblical civilization despite all the socio-economical differences with Western Europe. As far as the tiny minority of potential scientists in Russia is concerned, they relied on the same cultural infrastructure as the minority of the same kind in the Western Europe.

In China the main hindrance was apparently the lack of a concept of ?law of nature?. When a missionary tried to explain to Chinese ?that God, who created the universe out of nothing, governs it by general Laws, worthy of his infinite Wisdom, and to which all creatures conform with a wonderful regularity, they say, that these are high-sounding words to which they can affix no idea, and which do not at all enlighten their understanding.

As for what we call laws, answer they, we comprehend an Order established by a Legislator, who has the power to enjoin them to creatures capable of executing these laws, and consequently capable of knowing and understanding them. If you say that God has established Laws, to be executed by Beings capable of knowing them, it follows that animals, plants, and in general all bodies which act conformable to these Universal Laws, have a knowledge of them, and consequently that they are endowed with understanding, which is absurd.?[19]

Some Merton?s followers pointed out the role of ?biblical worldview? in the rise of modern science by focusing on a new Protestant ? active, optimistic ? ?Christian empiricism? as the new respect to the facts of nature rather than to old-fashioned intellectual speculations and mysticism. [20] However such empiricism was insufficient for the first major triumphs in astronomy and physics authored both by Catholics and Protestants. And this approach had nothing to explain specific intellectual contribution into the new ? modern ? science.

The approach suggested here starts with selecting astronomy and physics as the core of the Scientific Revolution. The ?Biblical worldview? is reduced to two very basic postulates on an invisible super-intelligent Creator-Lawgiver who endowed humans with the free intelligent ability to understand His will and deeds. Those postulates were intellectual and inspirational support for a religious scientist to make fundamental science. The source of those postulates was the Bible itself whose role climaxed in the era of Reformation in both Catholic and Protestant parts of Europe.

It did climax regardless of the different roles of the Book in the Catholic tradition and the Protestant innovation, and due to the very fact of debates around its role together with its mass printing and translations into vernaculars. As far as science is concerned, the basic biblical prototype of the double postulate was much more important than theological subtleties which are too far from scientific problems.

After the debates of Reformation had been over, Protestant innovation became a new tradition, and different roles of the Bible started to work differently in Catholic and Protestant parts of Europe. The Protestant tradition promotes a much more active role of the Bible in daily life that could explain more active development of science than in Catholic and Orthodox traditions.

As to the science beyond physics, it was the very striking success of fundamental physics in demonstrating the ability of the human mind to probe and understand Nature that became a great inspiration and encouragement for scientists the non-physicists.

Since the modern physics was invented in the time when the Bible?s social role was the greatest in the European history, no wonder if contribution of the Bible into the genesis of the modern science was no less than the Bible?s contributions into European humanities. Even if a person of high European culture does not believe that he is a believer, he is familiar with biblical phrasings, characters, and stories, he is aware of basic biblical postulates and paradigms, which are in his intellectual arsenal.

The modern notion of atheism was formed in European culture, and so it is the biblical atheism which stemmed from the same source of freedom that was employed by Eve in the garden of Eden. And those Westerners who are open to Eastern wisdoms of Zen, Yoga and so on, implicitly follow the cultural genome of Biblical civilization, with its cultural genes of openness, activity, and higher personal freedom and responsibility per capita. In fact, cultural distance between biblical theist and biblical atheist is much less than the distance between representatives of different civilizations.

So, the hypothesis that the Bible inspired the Scientific Revolution is a simple answer to the Needham question since the Bible did distinguish European culture from all the others. However by the time of the Scientific Revolution the Bible was around for many centuries. Why had it been waiting for so long to launch the modern physics? It waited for the time when the Book took the most prominent cultural role in its history due to Gutenberg and Reformation.

The Scientific Revolution overlapped with a few major European phenomena: Renaissance, Reformation, Capitalism, and political fragmentation of Europe, as impossibility to create All-European Empire or even a predominant European Empire. All these phenomena mattered for the Scientific Revolution, and all of them required sufficient freedom per capita together with responsibility as respect to the rule of law, first and foremost to the rule of the supreme law ? intelligible, rational, even if super-rational, but not irrational law. The most fundamental all-European base for such a cultural infrastructure was the Bible whose role started to strengthen since 12th century with the principle ?Sola Scripture? (by scripture alone) triumphed in the Protestantism.

According to a Russian proverb and unregistered law of dialectics there is no bad without some good and no good without some bad. And the theistic predisposition was not absolutely beneficial. It hindered Galileo to discover universal gravity. Indeed, he discovered the first fundamental law of gravity which was not only the starting point for Newton?s theory of gravity but also, three centuries later, the guiding principle (of equivalence) for Einstein?s theory of gravity-space-time. Was not Galileo able to make a next step to inverse-square law of gravity? This is the question for the next and last posting, tomorrow.
