pest control Birmingham - Types of Termites and What They Look Like

Termites are a type of insect that eats wood for a fuel source, and if allowed to get inside the walls of someone's home can do a lot of damage. They have hugely voracious appetites and can easily lay waste to a house or barn, therefore prompt action should be taken at the first sign of a termite infestation.

There are almost 40 currently known different species of termites located all around the globe. Several varieties of subterranean termites are white in color due to lack of sunlight from living underground. They are usually much smaller in size than most termites and live in burrows that can reach upwards of 45 feet deep. The burrows can extend for several hundred feet in different directions from a central egress point. When operating above ground these termites tend to build small tunnels of mud to protect themselves from the sun and predators.

There is another common variety of termite that builds mounds on top of the ground instead of burrowing beneath it. In coniferous forests you will find species of termites that live in trees and consume them, moving on once they have eaten all they can from their current host. The majority of termites are wingless, but there are a few subterranean species that sprout wings once a year in order to fly off and start new colonies.

Termites are often mistakenly thought of as part of the ant family. Although they exhibit a lot of the social sets of ants and sometimes live in similar surroundings, beyond that they do not share a lot of the same traits. Some of the more distinctive differences between the two are that ants have antennae that are elbowed and termites do not. Ants tend to be slender at the waist while termites aren't. Although carpenter ants will burrow into wood, they don't consume it like a termite will. As a matter of fact, scientists have recently determined termite DNA to be closer to that of a cockroach than that of an ant.

Termites are similar to ants in that they live in colonies and adhere to a strict hierarchy. At the center of the nest is the queen with the king in attendance. She can lay several million eggs in her lifetime. The remainder of her colony is divided into soldiers and workers. The soldiers are responsible for protecting the nest and the queen, while the workers take care of the nest upkeep, including any needed expansion. They also take care of the larvae, and are tasked with finding and bringing back cellulose to feed everyone.

When termites eat wood fiber they put out large amounts of methane gas as a byproduct of the digestion process. Some ponder if this may contribute to global warming, as methane is considered a green house gas. On the other hand, termites consume a lot of the downed trees and other foliage in woodland areas, which helps keep the fuel source down in times of forest fires. Although considered a pest by many, termites do serve an important ecological purpose.

Russia "optimistic" on U.S. trade vote, officials say

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Russian government remains hopeful the U.S. Congress will approve a bill to upgrade bilateral trade relations, despite a potentially tough political climate heading into U.S. elections in November, Russian officials said on Friday.

"We are optimistic. We need to be optimistic," Alexey Drobinin, senior counselor at the Russian Embassy in Washington, told reporters. "We think that expanding trade relations is a good way to broaden our overall relationship."

Congress is under pressure to lift a Cold War provision known as the Jackson-Vanik amendment and approve "permanent normal trade relations," or PNTR, with Russia to ensure U.S. companies share in the full market-opening benefit of Moscow's entry into the World Trade Organization last week.

Drobinin discussed the issue during a briefing on Russia's hopes for next week's meeting of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, which it is hosting this year in Vladivostok.

U.S. business groups hope the House of Representatives and Senate will pass the PNTR legislation in September, before lawmakers return home to campaign.

But with concerns in Congress about Moscow's support for Iran and Syria, the timing of a vote remains unclear.

Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama on Thursday of being too accommodating to Moscow and promised "less flexibility and more backbone" in U.S. policy if he wins the November 6 election.

The Jackson-Vanik amendment tied normal tariff treatment for goods from the former Soviet Union to the rights of Jews to emigrate. Russia has been deemed in compliance for nearly two decades. But the provision remains on the books, at odds with WTO rules requiring members to provide normal trade relations to one another on an unconditional basis.

Mikhail Kalugin, acting head of the embassy's economic section, said that although Washington had still not approved PNTR, Moscow did not plan to impose higher tariffs on goods from the United States than on other WTO members.

"But still, on paper, the United States should repeal Jackson-Vanik" to ensure U.S. companies receive the full benefits of Russia's accession, Kalugin said.

HUMAN RIGHTS, SYRIA ISSUES

In addition to making tariff cuts, Moscow has agreed to opens its services markets and make other reforms as part of its accession to the WTO. U.S. companies fear those benefits are at risk and worry they will not have the protection against arbitrary Russian trade measures until PNTR is passed.

Congress is expected to attach legislation known as the "Magnitsky bill" to punish Russia officials for alleged human rights abuses to any bill to establish PNTR.

In addition, some lawmakers are pushing for a non-binding resolution of disapproval for Moscow's support for the Syrian government in its bloody battle against rebel groups.

"Of course, we are against any non-trade issues to be inserted in a trade bill. ... Our opposition is very clear on that," Kalugin said.

The United States and Russia have been working together on a number of issues related to APEC.

Those include initiatives aimed at reducing tariffs on environmental goods, improving food security, reducing "choke points" in global supplies and using trade agreements to improve government transparency, Kalugin said.

Obama is skipping the APEC summit on September 8 and 9 because it comes right after he accepts the Democratic Party nomination on Thursday to run again for president.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will represent the United States at the summit.

ECB's Asmussen: IMF must be involved in conditions for new bond buys

POTSDAM, Germany (Reuters) - The European Central Bank should buy sovereign bonds of troubled euro zone states only if the International Monetary Fund is involved in setting the economic reform programs that should be a condition for the intervention, a top ECB policymaker said.

European Central Bank board member Joerg Asmussen said on Thursday the euro zone's bailout funds should be used to intervene on the primary bond markets of countries that request aid before the bank acts. This aid would be conditional on extensive economic reforms.

"From my point of view this means that the IMF will be involved in setting the economic adjustment programs because the IMF of course has unique know-how and has high leverage as an external policeman in these cases," Asmussen said.

With rumors swirling that Spain could request a rescue loan from Europe, the IMF reiterated on Thursday it was not in talks with Madrid on a bailout and was not making plans for one.

IMF spokesman Gerry Rice said it was up to Madrid to decide if it wanted to request aid from the European Union. A rescue by Europe would likely involve ECB buying of Spanish bonds.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has said he is waiting to hear more about the ECB's bond buying program before deciding whether his country needs aid.

The ECB is being forced to take a greater role in fighting the euro zone crisis while governments negotiate legal and political hurdles to coordinating a longer-term response, but is keen not to overstretch itself.

"Nobody should expect from us that we will do our part if others don't do theirs... Central bank action is no substitute for government action," Asmussen said during a speech to his Social Democrat party members.

"Central bank action cannot and shall not iron out the mistakes of fiscal and financial market policies. Governments have to do this themselves."

Since ECB President Mario Draghi vowed a month ago to do whatever it takes to save the euro, Spanish and Italian bond yields have fallen markedly.

At a policy meeting next week, Draghi is expected to reveal the ECB's terms of engagement for intervening in the bond market, reconciling an unwilling German Bundesbank to the plan while avoiding conditions that will scupper its effectiveness.

Draghi has said the ECB will buy Spanish and Italian bonds if called upon but that any recipient country must first seek help from the euro zone's rescue fund, to which conditions will be attached.

Asmussen, one of the six-member ECB Executive Board, has already said he wants the ECB only to buy bonds with short-dated maturities and the problem of the ECB being perceived as a "preferred creditor" needed to be addressed.

He also said the new program should learn from the last one last year. It was hurt then by the experience of buying Italian and Spanish bonds, only for Italy's then-prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, to go back on the reform promises he had made to get the ECB to step in just days after he made the commitment.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has signaled her backing for his strategy despite warnings from Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann that to do so would risk letting indebted euro zone governments off the hook for the austerity measures and reforms they need to implement.
