Mauritian beaches hold clues to a lost continent

Tim Graham

Crystals found on the sandy beaches of Mauritius suggest that chunks of an ancient continent called "Mauritia" may lie beneath the ocean floor, between the land masses of India and Africa.

By Nidhi Subbaraman

The beaches of Mauritius surround the island like a foamy white trim and sprinkled in the sand are clues to a lost, submerged continent.

Ancient zircon crystals harvested from sand samples were found to be curiously older than the island itself. The island is only 8.9 million years old, but one of the hardy crystals dated back almost 2 billion years, and others are estimated to be at least 660 million years old.?

Scientists who found the minerals explain that they belong to an ancient continent they have named "Mauritia" and estimate that there are chunks of it lying beneath the ocean and under the ocean floor between the land masses of India and Africa.?A team led by Bj?rn Jamtveit from the University of Oslo surmises that the telltale zircons rose to the surface on columns of hot magma welling up from under the crust. They coated Mauritius ? itself the product of a recent volcanic belch ? and remained there until they were picked up, sorted and analyzed by the Norwegian crew.?

Mauritia would have been part of a single land mass called Rodinia that included what?s now India and Madagascar, Jamtveit told National Geographic. Per the scientists' theory, Mauritia sank beneath the ocean when India was pried away from Africa to form the Indian Ocean.?Their findings were published in Nature Geoscience this week.

While some experts agree that there isn't another likely source for the crystals, as Conall Mac Niocaill told Nature News,?others like Jerome Dyment don't rule out the possibility that they could have landed on the beach on board human-made machinery or materials.

But based on what they've found, Jamtveit and and his team write that they fully expect to find other land masses hiding under the sea, too.?

'Unjust!' Poet shouts down court after getting 15 years for verse

DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? A poet jailed for a verse considered offensive to Qatar's ruler harshly denounced the Gulf nation's legal proceedings on Monday after an appeals court reduced his life sentence but still kept a 15-year prison term.

The rant in court ? rare in the tightly controlled Gulf Arab states ? underscored the free speech battles across the region as Western-backed authorities take strict measures against perceived political dissident in the wake of the Arab Spring.

From Kuwait to Oman, dozens of people have been arrested in the past year for social media posts deemed insulting to leaders or calling for political forms.

"Unjust," shouted poet Muhammad ibn al-Dheeb al-Ajami in the heavily guarded courtroom in Qatar's capita, Doha, after his appeal to drop the conviction was denied. The court, however, cut the life sentence handed down in November and imposed a 15-year term.

Al-Ajami faced specific charges from a poem posted online in 2010 that discussed the traits needed for a good leader ? which apparently was seen by authorities as a challenge to Qatar's emir and the ruling family.

But he also was more widely known for an Internet video of him reciting "Tunisian Jasmine," a poem lauding that country's popular uprising, which touched off the Arab Spring rebellions across the Middle East. In the poem, he said, "we are all Tunisia in the face of repressive" authorities and criticized Arab governments that restrict freedoms, calling them "thieves."

Al-Ajami still can appeal to a higher court.

"This sentence will not stand," said his brother Hasan. "When you strip away everything, this is just a case about power and pressure."

Earlier this month, a Kuwait court sentenced three former opposition lawmakers to three years hard labor for insulting the country's ruler during speeches made at political rallies. In January, a Kuwait blogger and online journalists received two-year sentences in back-to-back convictions for posts deemed "insulting" to the emir.

In November, the United Arab Emirates set stricter Internet monitoring and enforcement codes. They include giving authorities wider leeway to arrest Web activists for offenses such as mocking the country's leadership or calling for demonstrations.

Playstation 4 Games Warn of PS-Style Surveillance

The debut of the PlayStation 4 in New York City Wednesday (Feb. 20) was as remarkable for what it showed as for what it didn't show: Sony unveiled a raft of beautiful, incredibly realistic new games, but not the console itself. The device, perhaps in a straight-from-the-lab rough appearance, was somewhere offstage, driving the giant projectors that broadcast previews of upcoming games around the Hammerstein Ballroom.

Out-of-site-yet-everywhere seems to be the overall metaphor of the PlayStation 4 (PS4), as Sony described it. The PS4 (which Sony plans to sell by year's end) is not so much a machine as a network ? with games delivered from the cloud, games that can follow you as you move from the PS4 to a mobile device, and the ability to post video clips of your adventures or even broadcast entire games online.

"We're making it so your friends can look over your shoulder virtually and interact with you as you play," said David Perry, co-founder of Gaikai, a company that Sony bought to build its cloud-gaming network.

But not only friends will be watching. Sony will. "The PlayStation network will get to know you by understanding your personal preferences and the preferences of your community and turn this knowledge into useful information that will enhance your gameplay," Perry said.

Every important technology has good and bad uses. Some of the upcoming games that Sony showcased for the PS4 explore, perhaps unwittingly, the darker side of omnipresent, omniscient networks similar to what Sony is building.

Suckerpunch's new game "inFAMOUS: Second Son" explores the surveillance state. "Right now, there are 4.2 million security cameras distributed all around Great Britain. That's one camera for every 14 citizens," said game director Nate Fox, in a dramatic introduction to the game. "It is hard to put your finger on what that sense of security is worth, but it is easy to say what it costs ? our freedom."

Like Great Britain, the PS4 will also have a vast network of cameras ? not one for every 14 citizens, but one for every console owner. At the presentation, Marc Cerny, head of the PlayStation hardware platform, showed a photo of a depth-sensing stereo camera for the PS4, designed to track the new Dualshock controller as it moves.

The danger in "Second Son" is that some individuals have developed super-human powers (a la "Heroes") that make them living weapons. They carry no traditional weapons and show no physical signs of danger ? rendering all the modern surveillance tech impotent.

But what if new security technology could go beyond the physical? What if it could read people's intentions and predict their next moves?

What if it were like the PS4?

Sony believes that PlayStation owners simply give off so much data as they interact intensively with the console, other devices and the network that it can know what its users intend to do.

"People haven't' changed, but now everybody's broadcasting. And once you've seen it, all of it, how do you look away?"

That's not a quote from a Sony or game-company executive. It's from the lead character in the upcoming Ubisoft game "Watch Dogs." It follows a vigilante character with access to all that information. As he walks through Chicago, message windows pop up, showing details about the people he passes. Marcus Rhodes, a 43-year-old Iraq War veteran, is unemployed. Sandy Higgins, a grade-school teacher, recently won a child-custody battle and has a 30 percent chance of being a crime victim. [See also:?Is Your Cellphone Under Surveillance?]

In the clip, the vigilante uses the knowledge to find a woman in danger and to track her attacker in a chase through the city. But as the police then pursue him, the game shows how much data the protagonist himself is giving off.

It's rather unlikely that the PlayStation 4 was designed to be a mass surveillance device, a Trojan Horse of a game console designed to slip spooks into the living room. Far likelier, Sony just wants the games to be more involving and better targeted for the customers, so they will buy and play more games.

"If we know enough about you to predict the next game you'll purchase, then that game can be loaded and ready to go before you even click the button," Marc Cerny said.

But still, the PS4 will collect a lot of information. That itself, in the right imagination, could be fodder for a good dystopian video game.

Enrollment decrease in student health insurance provided through ...

by Sydney Reed Feb 24, 2013 4:46 pm Tags: Health insurance, SJSU Associated Students, Student Health Center, Students

Jamelia Little, a fourth year child and adolescent development major, said she was never informed of the supplementary health insurance offered to students through the Associated Students.

The campus should be more direct when it comes to informing students about health insurance options, she said.

?Sadly, I do not have insurance,??Little said.

Little said her health insurance was cut when she was 18?because her parents became unemployed, which forced her to go to the Student Health Center.

"I was kind of forced to attend the health center because I had no where else to go," ?she said.

SJSU students pay a mandatory health fee in their tuition that provides students with basic services for free but students who need outside hospitalization or treatment not available at the health center may need to purchase supplemental health insurance, according to Shawn Chan, finance and accounting manager.

Chan, who has been working at SJSU for almost 19 years, said when he first got the job student health insurance was already being provided to students.

The Student Health Insurance program is a contract with the CSU system and ?all other campuses have the same coverage," Chan said.

According to the Student Health Insurance booklet, some of the services covered are diagnostic X-ray and lab tests, emergency care, pregnancy and maternity care, preventative care and speech therapy.

During the?2009-10 fiscal year, a total of 705 students were enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Program, but the following two fiscal years?experienced an enrollment decrease?to a number of 340 students during 2011-12, according to Chan.

Chan said the drop in the students enrolled in the program was because of President Obama?s health reform.

?Due to Obama?s health reform the dependent age extended to 26 years old, and that resulted in the anticipated drop in student enrollment,? he said.

Under the student health insurance program students can go to the health center for minor treatment but for severe?treatment the health center will refer them to a hospital,?Chan said.

?The initial part is they have to go to the health center first for reference outside for special treatment in case the Health Center cannot do anything about it,? he said.

Jessica Silva, a senior liberal studies major, said she was not aware the school provided health insurance but she thinks it?s a good thing for students who aren?t covered.

?Its an excellent idea for the school to provide health insurance,? she said, ?especially for students who pay their way through school, don?t get benefits from a job they work or don?t have parents who provide health insurance for them.?

The four years Silva lived on campus she said she used the health center a total of three or four times.

The Student Health Program offers plans to students of all ages, their spouses and children, Chan said.

According to Chan, because the dependent?s age has been extended to 26, the most popular plan?is?for students ages 25?to 30.

?Different people can buy it (insurance) for one semester,? he said.

According to the Student Health Program booklet, for students age 25?to 30 who are interested in enrolling for the annual program, the price would be $3,874 but can go as high as $12,442 for students ages 50 and over.

For a spring?and summer?semester the cost would range from $1,668 to $7,239 for students, according to the booklet

Students who decide?they?d like to?enroll?or renew health insurance?can go to general services in the Student Union and grab a booklet, which has an enrollment form in the back, Chan said

According to Chan, students can also enroll online and pay by credit card. No payments go through the university, he said.

Dozens of pro-Dorner protesters rally at LAPD HQ

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Dozens of protesters rallied outside Los Angeles police headquarters Saturday in support of Christopher Dorner, the former LAPD officer and suspected killer of four who died after a shootout and fire this week at a mountain cabin following one of the biggest manhunts in recent memory.

Protesters told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/11Ndm6i ) they didn't support Dorner's deadly methods, but objected to police corruption and brutality, and believed Dorner's claims of racism and unfair treatment by the department. Many said they were angered by the conduct of the manhunt that led to Dorner's death and injuries to innocent bystanders who were mistaken for him.

Michael Nam, 30, who held a sign with a flaming tombstone and the inscription "RIP Habeas Corpus," said it was "pretty obvious" police had no intention of bringing Dorner in alive.

"They were the judge, the jury and the executioner," Nam said. "As an American citizen, you have the right to a trial and due process by law."

During the hunt for Dorner, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck called for Dorner's surrender and said he didn't want to see the suspect or anyone else injured.

Dorner was already believed to have killed three people when he was cornered Tuesday at the cabin near Big Bear Lake, and during the standoff shot and killed a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy, authorities said.

Only after calls for surrender and use of milder tear gas did deputies launch pyrotechnic gas canisters into the cabin, and the subsequent fire was not intentional, the Sheriff's Department said.

Dorner died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the end of the standoff, sheriff's officials said.

The 33-year-old has already inspired a burgeoning subculture of followers. While most don't condone killing, they see him as an outlaw hero who raged against powerful forces of authority, and some even question whether he really died.

Tributes include a ballad titled "El Matapolicias," or "The Police Killer," penned by a Mexican crooner with lyrics paying homage to Dorner, and a YouTube clip showing excerpts from a video game titled "Christopher Dorner's Last Stand Survival Game" whose opening frame declares him "A True American Hero."

Rethinking the flagship: The case for Nokia's Lumia 620

DNP Is this the phone that could rescue Nokia

It's easy to dismiss the Lumia 620 as yet another cheaply-priced smartphone, but that isn't the case. In fact, Nokia's latest release made me completely rethink Windows Phone. Sure, the mobile OS lacks the app selection of its rivals, but maybe I didn't need them to begin with. Maybe I didn't need the same processor found in rival Android devices to run an OS that's generally much lighter and more direct. Perhaps Nokia thought the same thing, because in reading over the Lumia 620's spec sheet, there's a lot of decidedly low-to-middleweight hardware. But it's hundreds of dollars less than the Lumia 920 and once I got my hands on it, I realized this was the Windows Phone I had been waiting for.

Nokia needs a success. So does Microsoft -- it's been three years to the day since Windows Phone 7 was first announced

Nokia needs a success. So does Microsoft -- it's been three years to the day since Windows Phone 7 was first announced. Since then, we've seen Nokia transplant its ill-fated N9 into the stylish Lumia 800; then the bigger (and not as slick) Lumia 900 tried to crack America. On the sidelines, second-string Lumias like the 710 or the 610 arrived to antipathy. They lacked the design punch, build quality (and colors!) of the high-end iterations. Then late in 2012, Windows Phone 8 arrived and the pocket-straining Lumia 920 was unfortunately pitted against the Galaxy S III and the iPhone 5. An operating system that still had to prove itself was now going up against Android's and iOS' strongest players and on a two-year contract, to boot! That's a deep bet to make on a fledgling, niche OS. The Lumia 920 attempted to play on its strengths (like admittedly superb low-light photos and an enhanced touchscreen) to warrant the premium, but it doesn't quite hit home for me. Dropping any price-tag pretension, it's the Lumia 620 that is Nokia's most compelling Windows Phone to date.

Cruise passengers tell of hoarding, filth, fright

Illness may hit cruise ship passengersWeary and miserable, sickened by the stench of sewage, the last of more than 3,000 passengers walked off a hobbled cruise ship Friday after tugboats lugged it to the Alabama shore and finally brought an end to a five-day floating nightmare.

As they filed off the Carnival Triumph, people kissed loved ones and the ground beneath them. They gobbled down fresh food, took hot showers and gave thanks for the simple pleasures of power and functional plumbing.

The last passenger disembarked just before 2 a.m.

Safely ashore, the passengers told horror stories of a ship with corridors reeking of sewage, long lines for meals and people sleeping on deck to get out of the sweltering interior of the vessel. One person said it smelled like a zoo. Clark Jones of Dallas recalled seeing people hoard food and protect their turf on the ship.

?It?s really primitive stuff,? he said.

It took only hours for the first lawsuit to be filed, by a Texas woman who claimed in federal court that she suffered physical and emotional harm because Carnival failed to provide a seaworthy vessel and sanitary conditions, Reuters reported. Other lawsuits were expected.

Julie Billings told NBC News that the experience ?was like post-natural disaster, but stuck on a boat with 3,200 other people, and those poor workers trying to clean up after everyone and deal with everyone freaking out.?

The ship, three football fields long, lost power Sunday after a fire in the engine room and had to be towed to land. It was tugged first toward Mexico, then toward Mobile, Ala., after strong wind in the Gulf of Mexico carried it north.

'Tempers started flying'
On the last day of the rescue, the agony was prolonged by a snapped cable connecting the Triumph to one of four tugboats, to say nothing of the logistical challenge of easing the 100,000-ton behemoth safely into port when it had no power to steer itself.

Carnival had workers in place to provide passengers with warm food, blankets, phones and refreshments. Adding yet another complication, a bus carrying passengers from the Triumph to New Orleans, where they were to board charter flights home, broke down on Friday, and passengers had to wait for another bus to pick them up.

Other buses from Mobile began arriving Friday morning in Galveston, Texas, the ship?s point of departure.

Passengers generally had praise for the crew. Janie Baker told MSNBC that they were ?fantastic,? but that by the final night ?people?s tempers started flying.? She described one incident in which a passenger tried to disrupt a movie and was taken away by the crew.

?Going to the bathroom in plastic bags and then handing it to another human being to throw it away ? that is just the most embarrassing thing,? another passenger, Jayme Lamm, told MSNBC.

As they neared home, some people aboard chanted, ?Let me off, let me off!? They used bedsheets to make giant signs, visible from news helicopters hovering around the boat, that said, ?SOS!? or ?Sweet Home Alabama!?

?The ship?s afloat, so is the sewage,? another said.

Slideshow: Passengers share photos of life on crippled Carnival Triumph

The government is investigating the engine-room fire. Carnival, which has suspended the Triumph through mid-April, will give $500 to each passenger from the Triumph, plus reimbursement for the cruise and a free future cruise. Carnival also said Friday that passengers will be reimbursed for what they bought on the ship, not counting artwork and purchases in the casino and gift shop.

It was not clear how many would take the company up on the free cruise.

?Not with Carnival,? Billings said, asked on TODAY whether she would take a cruise again. ?Not yet.?

Carnival CEO: 'We failed'

As the ship docked, Carnival Cruise Lines CEO Gerry Cahill spoke to the media ? with some passengers cheering in the background ? and apologized for the ordeal.

?I appreciate the patience of our guests and their ability to cope with the situation,? he said. ?And I?d like to reiterate the apology I made earlier. I know the conditions on board were very poor,? he said.

?We pride ourselves on providing our guests with a great vacation experience, and clearly we failed in this particular case,? he added.

As for the crew, Terry Thornton, the company?s senior vice president, said that they would have the option of staying on the ship or moving to a hotel.

After the power went out and toilets stopped working, cruise staff instructed people to urinate into the showers and put fecal matter into plastic bags, which were collected by stewards and put into giant trash bags, passenger Shannon Caceres told NBC News.

Caceres, who lives in Flower Mound, Texas, described reports of people looting rooms and taking laptops, phones and cameras.

Two nights into the cruise, Caceres said that the crew decided to serve alcohol, which led to ?people screaming obscenities in the hallways, wasted.? The crew then stopped serving alcohol again.

Carnival had disputed passenger accounts before the ship reached land, but the photos, not to mention the relief on passengers? faces, seemed to confirm their accounts. The company had confirmed that fewer than two dozen public toilets were working.

The Triumph had 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew on board. With all the passengers off, the ship was being moved out of its dock Friday and to a nearby shipyard.
